Some clients (in fact, all I've tried, aside from curl and gsconfig.py where
I had to put in some custom code for it) will not send user/passwd
information unless the server requests it (by returning a 401 Login Required
response to the initial HTTP request.)  By default, GeoServer will not send
this, but you can configure it to use Challenge mode for authentication
instead.  See the mode= section of the security docs for details:
