it's not as simple as using a CQL_FILTER instead of filtering in SLD is it ?
they do their filtering in the db itself. i've done stuff before on big datasets
where you call the same layer twice with different (non filtering) styles and
one is cql_filtered the other not.

Ivan, you are correct! I tried it out and it seems like the filtering is done on
the db side just like I need and the performace is much better. I thought
CQL_FILTER was about the same as other filters so I never got down to trying it.
