You might also be interested in Thredds WMS - http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/projects/THREDDS/tech/tds4.1/reference/WMS.html. I am also starting on a CSIRO infrastructure project which will aim to improve NetCDF support across the board in Java land, using classic ucar netcdf and geotools.
