The only workaround I know to avoid the error in 2.1.0 is... not to use
Windows as the operating system. File browings works fine on Linux
and, I believe, OSX (the operating systems used by most of the
GeoServer developers).

No worries, the issue on Windows has been fixed in the meantime:
