Please, always report the full stack trace, that simple error is there not to scare the user too much with code, but it's useless for debugging. Look into the logs or enable "verbose exception reporting" and get again the service exception, this time full. About the difference between production server and desktop, I can only guess: sometimes production servers are put in a DMZ, a subnet which can be accessed from the internet, that can access selected machines in the organization, but sometimes disallowed to access external hosts (to make it less palatable to attack them and then use them to attach other hosts or do distributed DOS attacks).
