Having just battled away on CQL Filters, I am writing this in hope it saves someone some time.
1/ Remember to ensure the filter is properly escaped. 2/ Spatial filters work in native SRS only. Convert all geometry to native SRS. The SRS parameter is honoured in the output GML however. 3/ Geoserver (9 june 2011) ignores the distanceUnits parameter. The distance should be in the native SRS units. 4/ If the native SRS is lat/long, then geometry must be expressed in lat long ordering not x,y ordering.
