Robert, search the archives as there was a recent post about profiling which 
will help you identify the bottlenecks. But based on your description and the 
fact I know you are on the openlayers list, I suggest you ask there or at least 
focus some attention there. I know at the very least you will want to make a 
minimal build of openlayers that juts has the parts you need which will reduce 
the initial loading time.

I have not gotten to the point of doing any performance optimization yet, but 
probably should, so let us know how it goes :)
