Oh, set that in your application container with flags for java

-Dhttp.proxyHost=proxyhostURL
-Dhttp.proxyPort=proxyPortNumber
-Dhttp.proxyUser=someUserName
-Dhttp.proxyPassword=somePassword

For tomcat, you'd set that in your catalina.sh or catalina.bat.

No, this is not the case.

My Geoserver is behind a proxy, at this point do no matter if it is
publicly visible. My Geoserver instance needs to get images from
another WMS server (cascading), but connection happens across a proxy
server, so I need to fugure out how set the proxy settings to GET
images and send requests to the external WMS server.
