Ciao,
at the time of writing the situation is as follows:

- geoserver 2.0.x uses imageio-ext 1.0.8 which in turns uses gdal
.1.4.5 (with bindings modified by us)
- geoserver 2.1.1 and 2.1.x as well are in the same situation of geoserber 2.0.x
- geoserver trunk (aka 2.2.x) uses imageio-ext 1.1.0 which in turns
uses gdal 1.7.3

Shortly, I believe after 2.1.2 is cut, we should switch geoserver
2.1.x as well to imageio-ext 1.1.0.
