Hmm... I agree only partially. It's always best to know well the SLD language and the GeoServer own extensions and be able to write the styles by hand. That said, building complex styles by hand is time consuming, I see nothing wrong it having a tool do it in your place, provided the result is still reasonably easy to put one hands on for customizations.
