Data directory contents are never backwards compatible, one they are touched
by
a GeoServer x.y they cannot be opened anymore with a GeoServer x.y-1
I've tried once to change the code and make the backwards compatibility
work that way too (have the old GS ignore the configuration elements it does
not recognize), but failed.
