Not all browsers support including credentials in the URL like this - I know for sure that Internet Explorer does not, and I'm not sure about others. That's just as well though - the scheme you are proposing exposes your password to anyone who can use the 'view source' feature in his web browser.
If you can make a request to a secured endpoint (such as SERVER/geoserver/rest/) then GeoServer should send back a security challenge and prompt the user to enter his credentials.
