Not all browsers support including credentials in the URL like this - I know
for sure that Internet Explorer does not, and I'm not sure about others.
 That's just as well though - the scheme you are proposing exposes your
password to anyone who can use the 'view source' feature in his web browser.

If you can make a request to a secured endpoint (such as
SERVER/geoserver/rest/) then GeoServer should send back a security challenge
and prompt the user to enter his credentials.  Configuring your app to do
that before setting up the OpenLayers map should make it so that the secured
layers show up properly - but only after the user enters the proper
password.
