Yeah, it can be done, I actually do that routinely in all clustered installs
because of similar issues (for this one in particular
there is a system variable too, I just don't remember it right now).
You can remove gwc by going into WEB-INF/lib and remove all jars that have
gwc in their name (rm *gwc*.jar, on linux)
