I'm not aware of such limitation. Can you open a bug report on
jira.codehaus.org attaching your shapefile for analysis?
The issue is likely to be specific to your data.

Is the data in any particular charset (not ASCII, that is), and if so, did
you declare the charset in the shapefile store configuration?
