G'Day all,

We're rank beginners with GeoServer and are still struggling with some
basic troubleshooting.

The system is running 2.1-SNAPSHOT from 27 July in Debian (Lenny) and
Tomcat, sitting on top of a late model PostGIS installation. We are
*not* running the Suite installation.

PROBLEM

We export an ESRI shapefile with 30 attribute columns. pgADMIN3 and
shp2pgsql are used to push the shapefile into PostGIS.

We have a stack of corresponding SLD files, manually loaded (one by one)
through the GeoServer Style uploader.

To publish these 30 layers (one by one):

1. I start by asking for a new resource, browse the database, locate the
new/unpublished shapefile, and select to publish.

2. The default shapefile name is left as is, and I see the projection is
correct, but there are no Native or Lat/Lon extents.

3. Clicking to compute from data or native produces a java error which
notes: ERROR: column "the_geom" does not exist

4. Going back to PostGIS and looking in the table, sure enough, I see
the column is called "geom"

5. BUT: simply clicking to [re-load the feature types] in the Edit Layer
interface actually seems to create the correct col heading *and* the
bounds are found and populated. Mysterious, but great!

6. Under the publishing tab, I first try to just leave the default
polygon style in place (later we will try some of the SLDs uploaded: no
matter, same result) and then click to [Save]

7. The layer appears to be good: it's added to the list of layers, and
no errors are reported by GeoServer. HOWEVER:

8. We go to Layer Preview, and choose to view the layer as OpenLayers,
and get not the preview map, but a download dialog asking if we want to
save an xml file. This response is the same for all the WMS formats. The
WFS format at least provides a CSV output, in which I can see the
polygon IDs and their geometry data. The attribute data was not apparent.

9. Just for fun we launch GeoExplorer and try to place this layer in the
map: Java null pointer exception.

10. Going to read the GeoServer logs is an exercise in vertigo...I'm not
that good yet.

So, the basic question is: how to go about troubleshooting this
scenario? I can't really see anything to give me a clue about the problem...

Any and all advice most gratefully received!

Kind regards,

JB
