Hi Steve, I'm using GeoServer to produce a GeoJSON string for a Leaflet map. You can use the output as is. Send GeoServer a bbox parameter to limit the results. That's assuming you'd have a number features to display. Zoom into the map to see the dots convert into clickable icons. Maybe this will give you some ideas. The interface is still a work in progress, but it's been in production for about 6 months and works well.
