you are right!
the problem was the cascaded server (by the way it is a Geowebcache instance
that caches a commercial wms server by Intergraph). Geowebcache was keeping
open the connections after Geoserver requests. I solved the problem playing
with the configuration of the applications server hosting the Geowebcache and
the problem has been solved!

Still problems with my WMS cascading
Everything works perfectly but when the number of concurrent requests on
geoserver arises suddently I have this error: Address already in use: connect
java.net.BindException: Address already in use: connect
when the traffic decreases the tiles of the cascaded wms are again correctly
served.
This one is a problem that occurs in high load situations.
Any clue to solve this?
Are you sure the issue is with GeoServer and not the cascaded server?
I've just tried setting up two GeoServer instances locally, G1 and G2.
G2 runs on 8081, requires authentication for any WMS request.
G1 runs on 8080, cascadeds G2 with authentication enabled, then
built a quick benchmark with Jmeter that uses 32 concurrent threads
making a round of 10000 requests to G1, which are cascaded to G2,
all worked as expected.
Tried to pump up the concurrency level of both the wms store configuration
and the jmeter benchmark up to 128, could not reproduce the error you're seeing.
Cheers
Andrea
