Hi,
Getting min and max should be possible by doing getFeature with
&propertyname=attribute&maxFeatures=1&sortBy=attribute+A and then with
&propertyname=attribute&maxFeatures=1&sortBy=attribute+D. However, I would
guess this is not tested too much.

GetFeature is supposed to return features and their attributes, not
attribute statistics.
Indeed WFS is the wrong tool from the job, it can only return data as is,
it's not possible to get derived or aggregated information.
WPS has a AggregateProcess that can do one or more statistics
on a given vector layer field.
