Adding to what Stephen just said, if you are loading n tiles you have to
png/jpeg encode n images, while loading just one image you have to
do that just once. Definitely faster to work with the group, even on the
GeoServer side, it will take less cpu load to work with the group.
Also, I'm not 100% sure, but afaik if you sum the size of the n tiles it
will be larger than the one tile containing the group, so also
the network should benefit from using a group.
Finally, the browser has to keep all the images in memory uncompressed to
render them, once uncompressed n tiles take n times
more space than the single one, so by using a group (or making a request
with n layers instead on n request with 1) you're also going
to lighten the load on the browser.
