though if I understand correctly, what you're trying to achieve is different from what that old thread was talking about, if what you need is to configure per-layer credentials on gwc layers to connect a secured wms, set the <httpUsername>xxxx</httpUsername><httpPassword>xxxxx</httpPassword> properties to the <wmsLayer> configuration element. Is that what you mean?
