It should be possible, as long as you go through the regular gwc endpoint (i.e. /geoserver/gwc/service/wms) instead of using "direct wms integration" (i.e. /geoserver/wms), and you set the fullWMS property to true in <data dir>/gwc/geowebcache.xml.
That said I never tried it myself, but it should work as long as it works on the standalone gwc version.
