Yes, I just checked, it's documented in section 14.3.3. I've been thinking it would be nice to have a simple summary of the WFS/WMS requests in the GeoServer User Guide, to save users the pain of having to refer to the specs (which are somewhat less than pleasant reading). This would also be a place to document any differences or extensions to the base specs supported by GeoServer.
