The one way that I know(being a newbie myself) is by using SLD using Geoserver.
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/styling/sld-cookbook/points.html. This link will help you assign markers for points. I think you can similarly do that for different types of features.

Hello,I have a geoserver 2.1 running fine with many layers with markers.I want to show a layer where the markers are the text from a field in the database (Postgis) instead of an icon.
