Yes I've used the gmaps service with the geowebcache. You would create a
custom layer using the GM api, and then point it to /gwc/service/gmaps.

Googling this..found this example code for a google layer.
http://demo.geonode.org/developer

I have a few maps that use this method and it works well. You can do a
baselayer and/or a overlay as well.
