The bugs are history as far as I can tell, I've deployed GeoServer in
production on 64bit JVMs (linux) under high traffic and the JVM
architecture was the least of my problems. The performance penalty of 64bit
is discussed in the link from Oracle that I shared in my previous email,

It should suffice to say that every new deployment out there is likely to
be on 64 bits, if nothing else to take advantage of current hardware. It
seems like JAI is not available for Windows x64 which is what triggered
this thread in the first place. Other platforms don't have this problem
