As it might be related, I'll add that, when importing the original data 
into PostGIS, shp2pgsql tells me:

shp2pgsql -W ISO-8859-1 -I SDEADMIN_WEGE geo.wege > geo.wege.sql
Shapefile type: ArcZ
Postgis type: MULTILINESTRING[4]

Could it be that the geometry type is not kosher for GeoServer?
