global.xml did not seem to be corrupted, but I removed it anyway, and still no luck. I do see that wcs.xml, wms.xml, and wfs.xml all are present but have no data. Can I remove these three files and try again?

Thanks,
Steve

    Hi Andrea,

The log from geoserver does indeed end as I indicated. The
following log is from Tomcat "catalina.out"

It appears you have one of the xml config file that's corrupted, I believe global.xml.

Can you have a look at it and fix it? If it's global.xml you can eventually delete it, GeoServer should re-create it (but you'll lose stuff like contact information), it's just not able to
work with a corrupt one

Cheers
Andrea
