Hi, GDAL/OGR has a brand new and really promising driver for converting OSM data. http://gdal.org/ogr/drv_osm.html
Driver can output directly to any vector format supported by GDAL/OGR so it is not necessary to have PostGIS installed. It works also on Windows and for my mind it is pretty fast. Some timings can be read here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gis.gdal.devel/32175 I hope somebody gets interested in trying GDAL OSM driver for serious rendering.
