The two code paths are completely different from each other and they are
not meant to produce the same size
to start with, I wrote them and I would not be able to predict an
adjustment factor myself, as it's most likely font
specific.
In one case we just turn the symbol into a vector representation, scale it
so that the largest side of the containing
bbox is large 1, and then scale it up to the requested size, in the other
case we just ask for a font whose point
size is the requested one
