After the reinstall of geoserver did you set the GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR in webapps/geoserver/WEB-INF/web.xml ?

If you wish to keep your data on reinstalling GeoServer, you need to backup that directory before deleting geoserver directory. I haven''t checked it out but I think there's away of configuring a directory that's outside of the web directory.
