It would not be a problem to use st_astiff instead of st_aspng but I  
have to test first. Can you open a JIRA issue ?

The patch would go into geotools 8.x meaning that you have to use the  
upcoming geoserver 2.2.0.

If it is urgent, it is possible to prepare an individual jar file  
after you opened the jira issue.
