Please dont hijack threads - start another. Your question has nothing to
do with out of memory errors in 2.2. RC3.
That said, I dont immediately see the relevance of your question to
geoserver at all. It would seem to me that you to do land-use
classification from remote-sensing data, and combine results with some
geometric calculations (area x forest type x fudge-factor + slope-base
estimate for soil depth). Landuse/forest-type classification is large
active research area within remote sensing so I would suggest you delve
into that first. The GIS aspects are pretty simple by comparison.
