Thanks you very much Jukka for the light you have shed on this. Since I 
am using fixed zoom on 900913 google basemap, I had assumed that the 
tiles matched. I am aware that part of the issue also resided in 
Openlayers because it works if I remove maxExtent for a layer. From what 
you have said, it would appear that openlayer is using a different 
tileoffset and so generating different bbox to that of the tiles. I will 
delve into OL code and see what I can do.
