A good way to try and sort this out is to use firebug or similar and 
look at the actual call made to geoserver. You can copy and make the 
call in isolation in a browser tab. If geoserver is returning an error, 
then a geoserver problem; if the call is malformed or not made, then the 
problem is with the class. (My bets would be on the geoext2 - its beta 
software at best).
