Which kind of data are you handling? vectorials or rasters? On which geoserver
version?
In the case of raster data I think it's because geoserver tries to resolve a
stile to renderer the image (to understand how it is performed take a look here
http://geo-solutions.blogspot.it/2012/04/dynamic-wms-styling-with-geoserver-sld.html).
I recently propose a patch to be able to add the sld=URL (and other vendors
parameters http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/services/wms/vendor.html)
to the getMap request into kml file.
