Hi Zsolt,
I am able to access both secured and unsecured GeoServer layers in ArcGIS 9.3x
and 10.
The following is my personal check list for when I have trouble viewing layers
in ArcGIS.
1) The Catalog Security needs to be set to Challenge, otherwise you can't
see the layers in ArcGIS.
2) Check which Role(s) are associated with the required user and make sure
those Roles are linked with the correct workspace/layers in Data Security.
3) Check your Service Security rules. A generic rule for all layers is -
Rule Path: *.* , Roles: *
This means all services and methods are available for all roles no matter what.
- I would test this to make sure I could view the secured layers
before adjusting the rules to meet your needs.
- This is the step I would always forget and wonder why I couldn't
access my layers. Now I just leave the setting as *.* for all users as the
data security page secures the layers enough for what we require.
Good luck :)

Hi Zsolt
I don't have a 9.3.x ArcGIs release to try. I can confirm you that setting the
challenge mode works for ArcGIS 10.

Thanks!
I tried to change to challenge mode, but everything's the same that was before,
regarding ArcMap WMS connection.
All layers appear except the secured ones. Even if I add the login/pw!

Zsolt

I've never used ArcGIS, but try setting the catalog security mode to challenge,
it might force ArcGIS to send over the credentials (and will make the request
for credentials appear to every other client too, I'm afraid, even browsers).
Cheers
