As I suggested before, this could be the cause of your slowness, but it actually gets worse, you'll have portions of GeoServer not working at all. I'm in the process of making trunk (2.3.x) OpenJDK7 compatible: so far I've found a number of issues in how XStream (doesn't) work with it, and with changes in TreeSet behavior: the changes are many enough that I won't backport them to the 2.2.x series. The portions affected are the security subsystem, parts of REST config and the ogr2ogr output format, as well support for time/elevation in WMS. Also see this recent benchmark (I was not involved in it): http://research.geodan.nl/2012/10/openjdk7-vs-oracle-jdk7-with-geoserver/ Long story short, if you are not just painting a small amount of geometries, OpenJDK is significantly slower (regardless of the style you use).
