Well apart from quality time with SLD spec and SLD recipes, I dont know
of short cuts. If you are in the ArcGIS world, there are tools for
creating SLDs from mxd styling. We use Geocat-bridge, but there is a
freebie around as well - at very least, these create a skeleton that you
can enhance, though complex multi-layer symbols are an issue.
