I experienced this as well with gt-arcsde v2.7.1, using ESRI's 9.3.1 client library as well as their 10.1 client library. Reverting back to gt-arcsde v2.6.1 resulted in the problem going away, with both ESRI v9.3.1 and v10.1 libraries. Reverting back to gt-arcsde v2.7.1 and deleting any raster layers that existed in my SDE repository made the error go away. Which I should've done a long time ago, because raster in ArcSDE stinks like I can't tell you.
