it would be really usefull if you would give us some more information.
 
How did you delete the layer? Just in the Filesystem? Via Rest? Via GUI? What 
about log-entries in geoserver.log? Some more informations that could be 
important? What does it mean "crashed"? Is the gui still working? Or is nothing 
working at all?
 
As general as you asked the list I will answer your question also general: A 
clear nes (no and yes merged). It depends of your answers.

        Running Geoserver 2.1.  I accidentally deleted a layer which was also 
being served via geowebcache.  On restart this crashed geoserver and I can no 
longe rlog in.  Is it possible to remove the layer from an xml config file and 
get geoserver booting again?
