Chris, as far as I know, if you are only using GeoServer alongside other software, you are not required to purchase a commercial license.
Simple aggregation does not cause other software to be affected by the GPL. You are only required to purchase a commercial license if you modify GeoServer and do not wish to publish these modifications, or otherwise do not wish to comply with the terms of the GPL.
