You could also have a look at the PointStacker rendering transformation:
http://suite.opengeo.org/opengeo-docs/cartography/rt/pointstacker.html
It probably won't do exactly what you want, but it would be fairly simple
to either extend it or modify it to provide functionality very similar to
the deconfliction capability currently in the labeller. This would be a
cleaner and more versatile approach, I think, and would be a nice addition
to GeoServer styling.
