The problem most likely has nothing to do with the Tomcat version, Tomcat 6
is a widely deployed platform under many different scenarios.

Did the installation complete? Are you able to run GeoServer and see its
admin page? Again, it would be nice to see if you get any errors, and what
configuration parameters you are using before being abe to make an educated
guess as to what's happening.
