I have the same problem. I am running geoserver 2.1.4 and sql server 2008 r2.
I can't figure out what to do. It's Ok with the shape file ,but as I import
shape file to sql server and create a new layer I can't see  layer preview
and when I open the KML or GML I get a null exception error!
