No, the data directory for the two instances was not shared. I was a bit scared about upgrading a machine with issues, but the upgrade went very smoothly. (I did take a snap shot of the VM the geoserver is running in first though). I'm on 2.3.3 now and finally.. I can login again :-) Thanks for your support, Christian!
