Thanks for the warning!

The geoserver is a virtual server though, and we have separate DEV, TEST en 
PRODUCTION environments running... so the upgrade will be tried/tested on a 
clone of the DEV server... so we should be safe.

That's something I would try, yes.
Mind, there have been large changes in the security subsystem since 2.2.0, as 
well as significant changes in layer group configuration,
some users reported hiccups in the upgrade.

Please make a copy of your data directory and try running 2.4.1 against the copy
