Hi Just to close this off for the moment.
I have set the default style to the pointstacker style and build up a getfeatureinfo request based on the default point style. In addition I have added the buffer parameter ( http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/services/wms/vendor.html <http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/services/wms/vendor.html> ) to the request to take into account the fact that the point stacker object is not in the same place as the points it is 'stacking'.
