Ah, pretty old one, I remember it suffered from catalog data structure
corruption when
there were multiple admins, or a single amdin + parallel rest config, doing
changes to the
configuration.
We made a number of fixes to prevent catalog corruption since then, you
should try upgrading
to GeoServer 2.5.0 (which also has some measures to deal with an already
corrupted catalog,
that are yet missing from 2.4.x):

When trying to upgrade make sure you do a backup of the data directory
though, 2.5.x will
add new configuration elements that 2.1.4 won't be able to understand, in
case you want
to go back later.
