Ahh, my status as a complete GeoServer neophyte has been revealed! Nonetheless, a few follow-up clarifications might be useful:

1: What would be the process to download and install a community module? I found policy documentation here: http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/policies/community-modules.html However, at the front of the community module documentation there is no mention of how to download/install: http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/community/index.html

2: The author of the data importer suggests that there is a standard GeoServer interface for loading data: "The Layer Importer differs from the standard GeoServer interface for loading data..." As far as I can tell, loading data to GeoServer requires tools and workflow *completely outside the GeoServer UI* (eg, manually uploading shapefiles, manually uploading to a PostGIS install, etc). Am I missing something?

Thanks very much for your patience and explanation.
Cheers,
JB

    Hi guys,
We're running GS2.5, 18 March 2014 build, and are struggling with the
challenge of uploading feature type layers to our PostGIS install
    (which
is remote, and locked down to local host).
I see mention of a Data Importer here:

http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/community/importer/guireference.html
but this does not appear anywhere in the admin interface (that I
    can see).

Did you download and install the importer extension?

Cheers
Andrea
