Thanks, Andrea.  If we are desperate enough I will have to debug my way
into the depths of the SDE driver to see what's going on.

Doesn't look like a firm decision, but clearly the desire to dump SDE is
there.  It seems ESRI is not interested in promoting the SDE client libs
either.  So perhaps GeoServer will follow the same path (and good
riddance!)  However, we have a lot of legacy SDE DBs, so we'll have to
think hard about whether to try and move them to Oracle or to try and fix
the driver issues.
